BARBERTON — PPG Industries Inc. has awarded Anne Hall, daughter of James and Patricia Hall, of Norton, a $1,500 per year, four-year community scholarship from the PPG Industries Foundation. It was awarded on the basis of academic record, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities and community involvement. Hall plans to attend Case Western Reserve University in the fall.
AKRON — Coming Together Akron, a diverse, community-based organization promoting racial harmony and cultural awareness, recently selected Adam Robinson, a senior at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, to receive the 2006 Richard L. Averitte $250 Memorial Scholarship. Robinson has participated all four years in the marching, jazz, symphonic and concert bands. Robinson will study music at The University of Akron.
• WOOSTER — Daniel Cohen, son of Marty and Elaine Cohen, of Fairlawn, and a graduate of Copley High School, has graduated summa cum laude from The College of Wooster. Daniel received the John F. Miller Prize as an outstanding student in philosophy and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa’s national honor society. Cohen also was awarded a university fellowship to pursue a doctorate degree in philosophy at The University of Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.
• GRANVILLE — Meghan Marley, daughter of Dr. Robert Marley and Rebecca Bracken-Marley, of Bath, has been inducted into Phi Alpha Theta, the international history honorary society. Marley, a 2002 graduate of Walsh Jesuit High School, received the honor as a graduating senior history major at Denison University. Selection criteria include completion of at least 12 credit hours of history, a minimum 3.1 GPA in the history field and an overall GPA of 3.0.
• ASHLAND — Several students were honored at the recent Ashland University Communication Arts banquet. Lindsay Toth, a senior majoring in journalism, received the Best Feature Writing Award. She is a 2002 Archbishop Hoban High School graduate and the daughter of Art and Janet Toth, of Norton. Jennifer Maxson, a senior majoring in marketing, received the Best Photography Award. Maxson is a 2002 Copley High School graduate and the daughter of Martin and Cindy Maxson, of Copley.
• ASHLAND — Lisa Parker, daughter of Jeffery and Linda Parker, of Fairlawn, is a member of Phi Alpha, which honors junior and senior social work majors who have attained scholarship and distinction of achievement as students of social work. A 2002 Copley High School graduate, Lisa recently received her bachelor of social work from Ashland University.
• COLUMBUS — Joseph Simonetti, a 1998 graduate of Copley High School, recently received the 2006 Student Award for Excellence in Community Service at The Ohio State University’s annual Celebration of Excellence in Community Service and Scholarship. He is the son of Joe and Teena Simonetti, of Fairlawn, president of the Medical Student Alumni Council of The Ohio State University Medical Center and founder of Project Savior, which provides medical assistance and education to an HIV/AIDS orphanage and hospice in Lusaka, Zambia.
• ATHENS — Lauren Buehrle, a freshman studying exercise physiology at Ohio University in Athens, accepted membership and was initiated into National Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. Lauren is the daughter of Patty and Robert Buehrle, of West Akron.
• DOWNTOWN AKRON — Local students attending The University of Akron who recently received scholarships and awards from the university’s Department of Chemistry include: Molly Conway, of Copley, Petro-Tex Corporation Scholarship in Chemistry; and David Hardy, of Norton, Merck Index Award.
• DOWNTOWN AKRON — The University of Akron presented LIFE (Legacy, Integrity, Fellowship and Excellence) Awards that honor exceptional students at the institution’s annual, end-of-the-year, all-campus recognition and celebration event. Award recipients included: Sara Anderson, Liehui Ge, Carolyn Gandy and Christopher Ingram, all of Akron; Jason Moore, of Cuyahoga Falls; Katelin Getz, Emily Peebles and Darlene Wredberg, all of Medina; and Jared Miller, of Norton.
• COLUMBUS — Jynnifer Elaine Bates, an Akron native, was one of 260 students who recently received academic hoods at The Ohio State University (OSU) Moritz College of Law. The hooding ceremony, which symbolizes the passage from student to graduate, took place at the Mershon Auditorium on the OSU campus. Bates is the daughter of Yolanda and Leon Bates, of Fairlawn. She graduated from Firestone High School in 1997 and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.
• DOWNTOWN AKRON — Several local students attending The University of Akron’s Summit College received student recognition awards from the college recently. Award recepients were: Kathryn Daily, Will Harper, Cheryl Ratcliff and Kyle Steiner, all of Akron; and Brian Schuett and Vanessa Zakich, both of Cuyahoga Falls.
• AKRON — These Archbishop Hoban High School students received the following awards in the Italian American Cultural Foundation’s Essay Contest: sophomore Mike Kallenbach won first place, and sophomores Claire Straus, Andrew Martina, Sam Scala and Elana Evans were awarded honorable mentions. Junior Gina Panno won first place in her division, and junior Anthony Congeni received an honorable mention. Senior Anna Dieglio won first place in her division, and Paul Chiarappa won second place. Each student received a cash award.
• WEST AKRON — Kyle Reilly, of Litchfield Middle School in West Akron, was recently recognized by KGLA Publications Inc. for outstanding achievement and was honored in the Who’s Who Among Outstanding Middle School Students 2005-06 Edition, Volume 1. Only a handful of middle school students nationwide are published in the semi-annual book. Students who are chosen not only excel in academics, athletics and other extracurricular activities, but go the extra mile in many other facets of their lives by showing that they have the special qualities to be recognized as a future leader.
