Wellesley student achievers

Several Wellesley residents were recently honored at Belmont Hill School's annual prize day ceremonies hosted for students who distinguished themselves during the school year.
L. Scott Feuer, son of Curt R. and Jean H. Feuer of Wellesley, a students in Form VI, was awarded the Instrumental Music Award. This award is presented to a member of the sixth form who participated faithfully in the instrumental program during his tenure at Belmont Hill.

Michael Kass, son of Robert and Linda Kass of Wellesley, a student in Form VI, was awarded a B-Flats/Glee club Award. This is given to members of the sixth form who have contributed to the advancement and success of the B-Flats and Glee Club.

Jay P. Civetti Jr., son of Jay P. and Carol G. Civetti of Wellesley, a student in Form VI, was awarded the Burt Community Service Award for extensive involvement in community service programs at Belmont Hill School. The award is named for Edward Burt, a 20-year faculty member at Belmont Hill who was instrumental in founding the community service program.

Civetti also won the Max Warburg Community Service Award that is awarded to a member of the senior class for unselfish involvement in a project of community service. This award was established by the Coppedge family in 1991, in memory of Max Warburg, a young boy who was diagnosed with leukemia in 1990, yet continued to face life with optimism, courage and cheerful determination.

T. Matthew Shields, son of Thomas and Janice Shields of Wellesley, a student in Form VI, was presented with the Babe Ruth Sportsmanship Award. This is given to a senior or seniors who, in the opinion of the faculty and students in the fifth and sixth form, had made the greatest contribution to the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play during the school year.

Christopher D. Orr, son of Stephen C. and Joan H. Orr of Wellesley Hills, a student in Form VI, was awarded the Downes History Prize. This is given to a member of the sixth form for outstanding work in history. The award was established by Christopher Beal '59 in memory of Prentice G. Downes, a teacher at Belmont Hill for 26 years.

Matthew Joseph Fay, son of Michael and Christine Fay of Wellesley Hills, a students in Form I, was awarded the Hamilton College Music Prize. This is awarded to the member of the school who, in the past year, has made the most significant achievement in the study or performance of music. During this school year, Fay was selected for the National Junior High Honor Choir.

Robert Eugene Rose, son of Robert and Mary Rose of Wellesley, a student in Form I, received a Middle School Award of Merit. This is awarded to boys in grades seven through nine who have shown sensitivity to others, sound moral character, concern for the quality of the school community and who, through their determination and perseverance, have merited recognition either by achieving significant personal growth or by making a significant but unheralded contribution to middle school life.

The following Wellesley residents were recently named to the honor roll at Boston College High School for the third quarter of the 1996-97 school year.

Elio J. DeLuca received senior high honors.

Brendan P. Dowdall and Benjamin C. Mercer received senior honors.

Michael J. Schulte received junior honors.

Christopher P. Leveriza received sophomore high honors.

Christopher M. Anderson received sophomore honors.

Kimberly Torres, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Torres of Wellesley, was named to the dean's list for the 1997 spring semester at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. A student is placed on the dean's list for earning an average of 90 or above during the term.

Torres recently received a bachelor of arts degree in government and sociology from Hamilton. She is a graduate of Wellesley Hills High School.

Several Wellesley residents were named to the dean's list at the Massachusetts Bay Community College for the spring 1997 semester. Students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Students from Wellesley are: Kimberlee A. Dow, Beth A. Guzak, David Racine, Jan-Falk Stetzelberg, Carrie Wollaston and Timothy Wollaston.

The Massachusetts Music Teachers Association hosted its annual State Contest June 7 at Boston University School for the Arts. Elizabeth B. Carey of Wellesley received honorable mention in the age 7 to 8 category piano competition. Carey is the daughter of John and Harriet Carey. She is a student of Ossie Borosh, who is an active member of MMTA. The Massachusetts Music Teachers Association is affiliated with the Music Teachers National Association.

Jeremy F. Parker, a senior at Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., was recently honored as a Durfee Scholar during the annual Charter Day Ceremony. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore F. Parker of Wellesley.

Charter Day is hosted every April to commemorate the granting of Hobart's charter by the state of New York, April 10, 1882. Charter Day awards are given to Hobart students in recognition of their academic achievements, community service and leadership. Durfee Scholars are honored for maintaining a 3.3 grade point average or higher for their senior year.

Four Wellesley students were among 34 honored at Buckingham Browne & Nichol's closing ceremony on May 23 at Sanders Theater in Harvard University.

Alison Marie Folland, Ari David Kardasis, Jennifer Carr Murray and Jacob Harry Peters, all seniors, were awarded prizes.

Folland was one of four students to receive arts prizes for excellence of work in a specific arts discipline. Folland currently co-stars in the film "All Over Me."

Kardasis was awarded two prizes: The John H. Walters Science Prize, in recognition of sustained enthusiasm and effort in physical science and named in honor of former science teacher John H. (Doc) Walters, and The Harry Davis Gaylord Award, given in the memory of the former mathematics teacher to a deserving senior for outstanding work in mathematics. Kardasis will attend Brown University in Rhode Island in the fall.

Murray was one of two students to receive The Nichols Prize given in memory of former headmaster Edgar Hamilton Nichols to a male and female who, throughout the year, attain the highest distinction jointly in scholarship and athletics. Murray will be attending Dartmouth College in the fall.

Peters was one of two students to receive The Lubets Prize established by Richard I. Lubets in memory of his parents and awarded to a student who has made an outstanding contribution in effort and attitude in their senior year.

Two students from Wellesley were recently inducted into the Spanish Honor Society at St. Sebastian's School in Needham: sophomores Keenan Flynn and Robert Lopez. Inductees must have had an average of at least 88 over three semesters of study.

Three students earned distinction for their performance on the National Latin Exam at St. Sebastian's School, a test taken annually by over 100,000 students from 11 countries. Achieving magna cum laude was sophomore Miguel Sanchez. Achieving cum laude was freshman Jonathan Pribaz.

Inducted into the Latin Honor Society at St. Sebastian's was eighth-grader Jonathan Yasuda.

Several local residents were named to the dean's list for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 1996-97 academic year at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

Heather P. Garni, daughter of Ken and Cindy Garni of Wellesley, is majoring in American studies. She is a graduate of Wellesley High School.

Zoe K. Damplo, daughter of Daphne Damplo of Wellesley, is majoring in history. She is a graduate of Wayland High School.

Patrick M. Cramb, son of Charles and Frances Cramb of Wellesley, is majoring in psychology. He is a graduate of Belmont Hill School.

Michelle E. Weber, daughter of Linda Weber of Wellesley, and Gerard Weber of Winchester, is majoring in environmental policy and chemistry. She is a graduate of Wellesley High School.

Braden D. Sicchitano, son of Kenton and Susan Sicchitano of Wellesley Hills, is majoring in American studies with a minor in education. He is a graduate of Belmont Hill School.

Alexander M. Quigley of Wellesley is majoring in government and geology: earth science. He is a graduate of Wellesley High School.

To be named to the dean's list, first-year students must earn a grade point average of at least 3.0, while sophomores, juniors and seniors must earn at least a 3.2 GPA.
