• BEREA — Ellen Mackall, of Copley, received the Carl J. Pfahl Memorial Award for having the highest grade point average in German courses at the annual Honor’s Day ceremony at Baldwin-Wallace College.
Mackall, a 2005 graduate of Revere High School, is a German and psychology major.
She is the daughter of Flo and Kurt Mackall.
• WEST AKRON — Our Lady of the Elms seventh-grade students Jeanine Ali, Simone Satow, Marissa Ward and Mary Kate Kesic, and ninth-grade student Amy Omar participated in the district science fair competition at The University of Akron March 18, receiving ratings of “excellent.”
Seventh-grade student Nancy Cantine received a “superior” rating and will represent Our Lady of the Elms at the state science fair competition at The Ohio State University May 6.
In addition, Nancy received an award from the Office of Naval Research for her engineering project, “Rips, Runs, and Tears: An Exploration of Durability in Pantyhose.”
• WEST AKRON — Emily Buzelli, a senior at Archbishop Hoban High School, took third place in “The Voice of Democracy” audio-essay contest, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and its Ladies Auxiliary’s premier youth scholarship program.
The Cuyahoga Falls VFW Post 1062 and Ladies Auxiliary sponsored Buzelli.
The contest’s format required the contestants to write and record a 3-to-5-minute essay on an audiocassette based on the theme “How I Demonstrate My Freedom.”
Winners were announced during the March 19 District Eight Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen awards banquet in Newton Falls.
There were a total of 23 entries representing District Eight.
• WEST AKRON — Bethany College student Johanna Heil has been chosen as one of four students to serve as a summer peace intern with the Disciples Peace Fellowship.
She will travel across the United States and Canada talking to youth about peace and justice.
Peace interns are young people trained in current peace and justice issues who provide educational and program support at church camps, serving as counselors and resource people, and modeling the lifestyle of peacemakers for youth, according to college officials.
Heil, a senior religious studies major, is the daughter of John and Kathleen Heil, of West Akron.
• COPLEY — Amelia Lamp, of Copley, has been selected for the Walter Williams Scholars program in the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Lamp, a Copley High School senior, is co-captain of the girls’ tennis team and a four-year tennis letterman, the senior class vice president and vice president of the Copley Speech and Debate Team. Lamp is the daughter of Richard and Mary Lamp.
• DOWNTOWN AKRON — Top students in The University of Akron College of Business Administration (CBA) were honored recently at the Beta Gamma Sigma initiation banquet at the Student Union Ballroom. Among those recognized were: Sadie Connelly, of Akron; Danielle Hess, of Akron; Lance Green, of Norton; and Emily Sinchok, of Peninsula.
• WEST AKRON — Joyce Dindo, of West Akron, a graduate of Walsh Jesuit High School, recently was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society at Wittenberg University. Dindo is a senior majoring in political science. She is the daughter of Kitty and Tom Dindo.
