• GREATER AKRON — Coming Together Akron has announced the Northeast Ohio finalists who will vie for a chance to compete in the state’s Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical Contest.
Students will orate their winning essays before a regional panel of judges March 16 at Firestone High School.
The contest will begin at 6 p.m. and is open to the public.
Finalists will be judged on aplomb, voice quality, physical dynamics, observance of the time limit, originality, posture and composition.
Participants winning in their division will advance to the state competition in Columbus April 28.
The theme for this year’s contest is “A New Spirit Rising.”
More than 400 students submitted themed essays.
Finalists include: in kindergarten, Mecca Link and Daelyn Adams, both from Stewart Afrocentric School in West Akron; grades 1-3, Connar Fleshman, grade 3, from Portage Path School for Technology in Highland Square, Jacob Mansfield, grade 2, from Essex Global Telecommunications and Modern Languages Elementary School in West Akron, and Jasmine Marie Moore, grade 1, from Stewart; grade 4-5, Heather Russ and Courtney Jones, grade 4, both from Seiberling Elementary School in Goodyear Heights, Benjamin Petit, grade 5, from Essex, and Brandy Watson, grade 5, from Stewart; grades 9-12, Courtney Day, Siri Hiremath, Lindsay Schell and Daniel Barchik, all 10th graders from Copley High School.
