DOWNTOWN AKRON — St. Vincent-St. Mary (STVM) High School senior and West Akron resident Max Shaul, pictured at far right*, son of Dennis and Cheryl Shaul, finished in the top 100 in the 2006 National Merit Program.
More than 1.3 million juniors in nearly 21,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2006 National Merit Program. The 2004 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) serves as an initial screen for program entrants.
In September, the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 51st annual National Merit Scholarship Program were announced by officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). These scholastically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $33 million, that will be offered this spring. Semifinalist Shaul finished in the top 100, while Christine Glendon finished in the top 600 in this competition.
Six STVM seniors were recognized as Commended Students. Approximately 34,000 students throughout the nation are recognized for their exceptional academic promise.

Senior Boros is recognized among 4,500 students selected from a pool of 150,000 students as a scholar by the 2005-06 National Hispanic Recognition Program.
Four more West Akron students have been named for Special Scholarships. These are students recognized by corporate sponsors who offer special scholarships through the NMSC. The students receiving these awards are James Kozlowski, Jennifer Kozlowski, Jessica Kozlowski and Florence Lucas.
STVM Headmaster David Rathz said, “This senior class having so many scholars recognized by the NMSC is an outstanding tribute to them as individuals, their families and to the STVM community. We are extremely proud.”
