• COPLEY — Copley High School has announced that Karlie Graf was the first runner-up in the annual “Ohio Writes for Tomorrow” Creative Writing contest sponsored by Ursuline College. Begun in 2003 in honor of the state’s bicentennial, the contest involves students writing about an Ohio experience. Entries are judged on the basis of originality, creativity, writing quality and style. Graf’s poem will be published on Ursuline’s Web site and will be considered for inclusion in “Inscape,” the college’s award-winning fine-arts publication. Graf was presented with various prizes for her poem at the awards ceremony.
• DOWNTOWN AKRON — Two University of Akron (UA) students have been named to UA’s International College Ambassadors for their extensive studies abroad. Candace Kellackey, of Akron, has been named the 2005-06 International College Ambassador, and Matthew Considine, of Akron, has been named the 2006-07 International College Ambassador. Kellackey at-tended Tec De Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico, during fall semester 2004. She also participated in a volunteer program aimed at teaching English to students from Monterrey. As the 2005-06 International College Ambassador, Kellackey is available to campus and community organizations as a public speaker to share her experiences from studying abroad. Kellackey is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in international business with a minor in Spanish. Considine is studying at The University of College Cork through The Institute for Study Abroad at Butler University in Ireland. He will be available to speak about his experiences during the 2006-07 academic year. Considine is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in marketing and advertising with a minor in finance.
• NORTON — Hiram College student Kaitlin Gibson, of Norton, has been inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education. The society elects those who exhibit scholarship, high personal standards and promise in teaching and allied professions, according to school officials. Gibson is a senior integrated language arts major.
• DOWNTOWN AKRON — The University of Akron (UA) law students brought home a Semi-Finalist Trophy from Loyola Law School’s fourth annual National Civil Trial Competition, which took place recently in Los Angeles. Members of the Akron mock trial team included Michael Cody, Robert Good, Aaron Howell and Josh Nanney. UA was one of 16 law schools to participate in the competition. Since 1982, UA mock trial teams have won two national championships and have been runner-up seven times.
• AKRON — Sarah Staudt, a sophomore at the University of North Dakota John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, recently was awarded the William T. Piper Scholarship. Staudt, of Akron, is majoring in commercial aviation. She is treasurer of Alpha Eta Rho.
