• WEST AKRON — Our Lady of the Elms senior Katherine Monasterio has been recognized by the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program. Monasterio was one of 4,500 selected from more than 150,000 high school students for academic excellence. Monasterio is an active member of The Elm Leaf (school newspaper) staff, serving in the past as a writer and page editor, and this year as managing editor. The National Hispanic Recognition Program, established in 1983, is a College Board program that provides national recognition of the exceptional academic achievements of Hispanic high school seniors and identifies them for postsecondary institutions.
• WEST AKRON — Ten students at Our Lady of the Elms High School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement (AP) Program Exams. Five students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3.0 or higher on five or more of these exams. They are: Faiza Khimji, Maria Kipfstuhl, Katherine Rose, Lia Santiago and Ashleigh Welko. Three students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3.0 or higher on four or more of these exams. They are: Nesrene Choujaa, Barbara Joy Jones and Rachel Naso. Two students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Examinations, with grades of 3.0 or higher. They are Colleen Furman and Lauren Jones. The College Board’s AP Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performances on the AP Exams. Students took AP Exams in May.
• WEST AKRON — Kelly Seagren received presidential honors at Valparaiso University (VU) for the 2004-05 school year. Student athletes at VU who receive these honors have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 after at least three semesters. Seagren, a VU graduate, received a degree in mechanical engineering. A member of the women’s cheerleading squad, she is the daughter of Donald and Rondi Seagren, of West Akron.
