• NORTHEAST OHIO — Three area Denison University students are among the winners of the Heritage Scholarship, a half-tuition award renewable for four years. Allyse Treier, of West Akron, the daughter of Diane and Bret Treier, is a 2005 graduate of Firestone High School. Philip Vogel, of Akron, the son of Colleen Torsney and Jim Vogel, is a 2005 graduate of Walsh Jesuit High School. Jason Goodspeed, of North Royalton, the son of Gary Goodspeed, of North Royalton, and Rose Marie Mercer, of Fairlawn, is a 2005 graduate of North Royalton High School.
• COPLEY — Copley High School has announced that seniors Tracy Meng and Daniel Wilkerson are two of 16,000 high school seniors who are semifinalists in the 51st National Merit Scholarship Program. Meng and Wilkerson have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth about $33 million. Winners will be announced in April.
• AKRON — Diane Kline, Heather Hess and Terra Kinkade are recipients of the 2005-06 College of Nursing Scholarship through The University of Akron, according to The Summit County Medical Alliance. The 2005-06 NEOUCOM student scholarship recipient is Jeanie Wang, a second-year medical student. This award is given to a graduate of a Summit County high school.
• AKRON — The 2005 Craftsman/NSTA Young Inventors Awards Program honored winners and finalists of the nationwide science competition, which invited second- through eighth-graders to invent a new tool or rethink an existing one. Tylan Stone, an eighth-grader at The Edge Academy, was one of 10 national finalists who won a $5,000 U.S. savings bond. Tylan invented a “Dew Rake” — a swimming “noodle” on a handle to pull through morning dew, “to knock the moisture down” and save water.
• ATHENS — Ohio University has awarded scholarships for the 2005-06 academic year to the following students. Upperclass scholarship recipients include: Morgan Allen, Copley High School; Carolyn Baginski, Revere High School; Dennis Butcher, Copley; Terry Caston, Revere; Evan Clar, Revere; Joanna Feigenbaum, Copley; Clarissa Kornell, Firestone High School; Richard Lampasone, Revere; Natalie Lombardi, Revere; Sarah Michelson, Firestone; Kimberly Raschke, Copley; Mark Ratchford, Firestone; Samantha Shupe, Revere; Janiene Torch, Revere; Elaina Weber, Revere; and Amelia Zupke, Archbishop Hoban High School.
