DOWNTOWN AKRON — St. Vincent-St. Mary High School (STVM) students earned 22 honors at the recent Scholastic Art Competition, which focuses on achievements in the visual arts.
The 2005 Northeast Central Ohio Scholastic Art Competition had more than 2,500 regional entries.
STVM students garnered two gold key awards, seven silver key awards and 13 honorable mentions in various media.
All gold and silver key winners’ artwork was displayed as part of an exhibition at the Kent State University Stark Campus.
Additionally, gold key winners will have their award-winning pieces sent to New York for judging on a national level.
STVM students earning honors in the 2005 competition include: Charley Able (gold key, three honorable mentions), Theresa Attalla (honorable mention), Martin Alvord (honorable mention), Evan Caruso (silver key, honorable mention), Kevin Hazlett (gold key, honorable mention), Telisha Galizio (silver key), David Kennedy (honorable mention), Kevin Kozlowski (silver key, honorable mention), Jennifer Kozowski (silver key), Allyse Ledford (silver key, honorable mention), Alyssa Petrosky (silver key, honorable mention), Chris Stavroff (honorable mention) and Sarah Walter (silver key, honorable mention).
• HIRAM — Akron resident Don-Tomis Leonhardt was recently awarded the Vachel Lindsay Scholarship at Hiram College.
The scholarship is given to first-year incoming students and provides $5,000 of the recipient’s 2005-06 tuition.
It is one of the college’s most valuable academic awards.
Candidates are evaluated based on their academic record, extracurricular activities, scores on standardized testing, a written essay, recommendations from teachers, counselors and parents, and an interview.
Scholarships are renewable.
The scholarship is named after American poet Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931), who attended Hiram College.
