Woodridge students excel at math
Students take home top prizes in Math League Contest
CUYAHOGA FALLS -- The Continental Math League Contest, an international math contest, hosts five meets, with six problems in each meet, once a month from November through March. Students from all over the world compete in this contest.
Woodridge Local Schools has been competing in the contest for 10 years, and this year, approximately 170 students in second through eighth grades participated. While there is no limit to the number of students schools may have on a team, only the top six scores are submitted in each meet.
Students can win individual medals for their performance, and teams can win for a total team effort.
The following students listed won national individual medals for not missing any problems all year: Luke Lehar, Ronald Norris and Peter Weiss, seventh-graders competing on the eighth-grade team; Cameron Hilling (third-time winner), Thomas Mencer (third-time winner) and Margaret Norris (second-time winner), sixth-graders on the seventh-grade team; Josh Conner (third-time winner), a fifth-grader on the sixth-grade team; Matthew Weiss (second-time winner), on the eighth-grade team; Charles Ard, Justin Fawley (second-time winner), Nathan Mercer, Hannah Rounds and Eric Tomlinson (second-time winner), on the sixth-grade team; Michael France, on the fifth-grade team; and Hannah Boggs, Ashley Christopher, Catrina Hilling, Hannah Margoff, Maxx Myers (second-time winner), Taylor Suchan and Nathan Tompkin, on the fourth-grade team.
Woodridge Intermediate School's fourth-grade team and Woodridge Middle School's seventh-grade team won the team awards in the contest. The seventh-grade team placed first out of 253 schools worldwide; the fourth-grade team placed first out of 550 schools worldwide.
In addition to Hilling, Mencer and Norris, the seventh-grade team members are: Emily Allan, Marco Caponi, Mitch Edwards, Alex Garner, Joe Morgan, Bradley Norval, Michael Rhodes, Sarah Vechery, Brian Weiner, Julie Weiner, Anthony Westren and Michael Wegner.
In addition to the fourth-grade team members listed above, the following students were also part of that team: Hannah Blubaugh, Sarah Dick, Biannca Frammartino, Branden Hartz, Ryan Lehar, Jeremy Light, Matthew Mencer, Hayley Mullins, Zack Perko, Drew Pinta, Austin Renner, Mary Shallahammer, John Slocum, Michael Tannous, Jacob Weese and Nick Weiner.
The fifth-grade team won its regional award for placing first in the regional division, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
Woodridge Schools also did well in the Destination Imagination contest this year. Out of 10 teams that competed at Aurora High School in March, four won second place and three won third place. The teams all received trophies and medals for their efforts.
