OHS students earn AP honors Odessa American
Thirty-five Odessa High School students have been named AP scholars by the College Board for their achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement exams.
According to information released by the College Board, only about 13 percent of the more than 700,000 students nationwide who took AP exams in May 2000 qualified for this recognition.
Students take AP exams in May, after completing college-level courses at their high school.
Possible scores on the exams range from one to five. Most colleges will award college credit to high school students if they earn a score of three or higher on an exam.
OHS student Jeffrey Boutin qualified for the AP scholar distinction award by earning an average score of 3.5 on all exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of the exams.
Sassan Ehdaie, Chermae Morris, John Osborne and Amit Patel qualified for the AP scholar with honor award by earning an average of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of the exams.

Permian High School had one AP scholar, but Permian’s senior counselor Dianne Mata said that Principal Brian Rosson had made a decision earlier not to release the student’s name at this time.
Rosson was not available to answer questions for this article because he was in Waco for the state UIL marching band competition. Permian is competing in the event.
AP exams are available nationally in a number of subjects, including biology, computer science, government, history, physics and Spanish.
Information released by the Texas Education Agency indicated the three tests most commonly taken by Texas students in the 1999-2000 school year were English language and composition, English literature and composition and United States history.
OHS Principal Alma Guerrero said this is a record number of AP scholars for the school.
"This says to me that the curriculum is working for these students. Eight or nine of them are still underclassmen and have the opportunity to earn more credits for college this year," she said.
