Honors and awards were given to 101 members of the Hopewell Valley Central High School Class of 2000 on June 19 (Monday) at Awards Night.

HONOR AWARDS

1. Award by the Hopewell Valley Y.M.C.A. given in memory of Bud Ruskie to the boy in the graduating class who best represents the Ideals of the School. Awarded to: Anthony E. Miller.

2. Award to the girl in the graduating class who best represents the Ideals of the School. Awarded to: Maryann Mulé.

3. The Gene T. Richard Memorial Award, presented by past Veterans of Foreign Wars Commanders William R. Gross and Atty T.A.S. VanHamel to the boy in the graduating class who best represents the qualities of Honor and Leadership. Awarded to: Michael P. Jackson.

19. The Dale W. Kintzel Award, given by his Family to the student in the graduating class who plans to further his or her education in Auto Mechanics or other vocational technical program. Awarded to: Michael Paul Esche.

20. The Janet Ellen Maloney Memorial Award to the student in the graduating class who has provided the most service to the Distributive Education Club. Awarded to: Oluwafunmilayo Angela Idowu.

21. The JoAnn Amison Award to the student in the graduating class with the Highest Scholastic Average and Proficiency in Marketing Education. Awarded to: Alyssum Sophia Ackers.

22. Award to the students in the graduating class who have demonstrated the Highest Proficiency in Architecture, Engineering and Computer Graphics. Awarded to: Brett Carpenter and Mark Steven Cifelli.

23. The Steven C. Veth Memorial Award presented by the Hopewell Valley Secretaries Association in recognition of outstanding achievement in woodworking. Awarded to: Heather Hughes Switlik.

24. The Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey Award to the student in the graduating class who has shown Outstanding Achievement in Foreign Language Study. Awarded to: Laura A. Petrillo.

25. The “Excellence in the Study of Science” Award, presented by the American Cyanamid Company to the student in the graduating class who has demonstrated the Highest Proficiency in Science. Awarded to: Anthony E. Miller.

26. The following students have been chosen as Physical Education Students of the Year in recognition of an individual’s commitment to the values of sportmanship, team play, cooperation and a dedication to the principles of physical education and physical fitness. Awarded to: Maryann Mulé and Jason Adam Orlosky.

27. The Musical Theatre Award is given to the students in the senior class with the highest proficiency in musical theatre. It is awarded to the students who have the highest degree of talent in this area, have developed a high level of technique and skill in musical theatre, and have displayed leadership, dedication and a full level of commitment to this art form. Awarded to: Jennifer Rose Karpiscak and Maryann Mulé.

28. Year 2000 Staff Recognition Award for High Achievement. Awarded to: Jennifer Lynn Folk.

29. An award to the student in the graduating class who has demonstrated outstanding achievement and excellence in social studies. Awarded to: Christopher Lorenzo Gaston.

30. The Trina Weller Award in the amount of $250 is presented to a student in the graduating class who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in chemistry. Awarded to: Heidi Alison Bogardus.

31. A Friend of the School presents the Science “Above and Beyond” Award in the amount of $100 for donating extra time to the science department. Awarded to: Brett Carpenter.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS

1. For Outstanding Community Service, an award is given by the Pennington First Aid Squad. Awarded to: Jennifer Lynn Folk, Heidi Lynn Freeman, Robert George Jackson, Dylan Alexander Tredrea.

2. For Outstanding Community Service, an award is given by Union Fire Company and Rescue Squad. Awarded to: Heidi Lynn Freeman and Joshua Lucas Hoyer.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

1. The Raymond R. Wagner Memorial Scholarship is based on growth shown during four years of high school, qualities of leadership and dependability, concern for and an unselfish commitment to other students and people in the community, as well as value of education. Two scholarships of $1500 each. Awarded to: Ha Na Chang and Michael P. Jackson.

2. The Hopewell Valley American Legion Post 339 Scholarship of $500 to a graduating senior planning further education and who has attended Hopewell Valley Central High School for at least two years. Awarded to: Benjamin Evan Goldsmith.

3. The Hopewell Valley Lions Club scholarship of $3000 is awarded to a student who has demonstrated a record of service to the outside community and has plans for further vocational or academic study. Awarded to: Maryann Mulé.

4. The Distinguished Retirees Scholarship of $500 given in honor of retiring members of the Hopewell Valley Regional School District faculty and staff to a graduating senior planning to pursue a career in education. Awarded to: Maryann Mulé.

5. The Hopewell Fire Department Scholarship of $500 is awarded to a worthy student going into a vocational, technical or medical career and who displays a commitment to service in the community. Awarded to: Michael P. Jackson.

6. Hopewell Elementary School PTO offers two scholarships of $500 each to graduating seniors who as former students of Hopewell Elementary School plan to further their academic studies and who have demonstrated a sense of pride and commitment through participating in school and community activities. Awarded to: Andrew Taylor Hall and Matthew Thomas Murray.

7. The Combs/Hutchison Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1000 in honor of Keith J. Combs and David K. Hutchison, Class of 1991, to a senior who enjoys the outdoors and would like to use the award either for experiential education or to continue formal education in the area of environmental studies. The recipient should exhibit the characteristics of Keith and David who valued friendship, honesty and love of the outdoors. Awarded to: David A. Berry.

8. The Richard W. Weasner Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500 awarded to a young man or woman planning further education in the fields of architecture, aviation, product design, or engineering in memory of Richard W. Weasner, Class of 1989. The recipient must have spent considerable time in school activities and public service endeavors. Awarded to: Thomas James Schlund Jr.

9. The Hopewell Business Association Scholarship of $500 to a member of the senior class who is planning to pursue further education in business education or a related field. Awarded to: Nicole M. Pall.

10. This award of $200 is being presented by Mrs. June Baker and Family in memory of her husband, fellow woodworker and craftsman Harold E. Baker, to the senior who has emulated his sincere attitude, work ethic and fine craftsmanship in woodshop for the past four years. Awarded to: John Broomer.

11. The Raymond S. and Adele D. Schulley Memorial Scholarship of $200 to a member of the graduating class who intends to major in early childhood education at a four year school and has displayed involvement with young children. Awarded to: Tiffany Lee Rust.

12. The Pennington Doctors Abey and Miller Scholarship of $300 open to any student planning a career in nursing. Awarded to: Michael Anthony Grippaldi.

13. The Bear Tavern Parents Association Scholarship of $500 to a graduating senior who is a former student of Bear Tavern School and who plans to further his/her academic studies at the college level. The scholarship is funded by the Bear Tavern Book Fair and is to be used to defray the cost of college textbooks. Awarded to: Melissa Alethia Mapp.

14. The Bill Hoagland Family Memorial Scholarship of $500 is offered to a student who is firm in his/her religious convictions, who has a sincere and abiding loyalty to family and friends, and who has demonstrated by word, deed and actions the same love and dedication that Bill Hoagland showed throughout his lifetime. Awarded to: Jacquelyn Secor Wilbur.

15. A gift certificate of $500 given in memory of Keith Combs is awarded to a student in the graduating class who best displays commitment, skill and craftsmanship in his/her chosen trade. Awarded to: William John Yost.

16. The Jack and Mary Rees Memorial Award in the amount of $200 to a graduating senior who has shown dedication and commitment in the area of performing arts. Awarded to: Jessica F. Pepperman.

17. The Hopewell Valley Central High School Parents’ Forum presents awards of $250 each to graduating seniors who plan to further their academic studies at the collegiate level and who, during four years of high school, have demonstrated qualities of leadership, service, and commitment through their active involvement in the school. Awarded to: Catherine Price Berei, Julia Anne Bullard, Justin Lai, Paul Miguel, Thomas James Schlund Jr., Erin D. Troegner, Michael Alan Upperco, Kyle Craig Wilson.

18. The Timberlane PTA Book Award presents scholarships of $500 to graduating seniors who plan to further their academic studies at the collegiate level and who, during four years of high school, have demonstrated qualities of leadership, service, and commitment through their active involvement in the school. Awarded to: Jason Adam Orlosky and Raisa Sheynberg.

19. A Mercer County Community College Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $2500. Awarded to: Jennifer L. Hoppe.

20. The Hopewell Women’s Club Scholarship of $300 is presented to a worthy student going into vocational, technical, business or medical career training of less than a bachelor’s degree. Awarded to: Jin Dan Lin.

21. The Megan Cranstoun Memorial Scholarship of $1000 is presented to a graduating senior who plans to enter the field of nursing. Awarded to: Ryan Joseph Horvath.

22. The George Renwick Scholarship of $200 is offered to a student with a learning disability who is continuing his/her education after high school. Awarded to: John Andrew Yaros.

23. The Hopewell Valley Republican Association awards a scholarship of $500 to a graduating senior who has been active in community service and intends to continue his/her education in social sciences. Awarded to: Fareha Syedda Ahmed.

24. The Hopewell Township PBA 342 offers a $1000 scholarship to a student pursing his/her education in the field of law enforcement. Awarded to: Heidi Lynn Freeman.

25. The Robert Rodgers III and the Richards Rogers Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $200 is offered to any graduating senior planning to enter the field of business. Awarded to: Jacqueline Lee Watson.

26. The Amy Rankin Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1000 to a graduating senior who intends to enter a four year school and who has succeeded in high school while overcoming a personal challenge or difficulty. Awarded to: Jin Dan Lin.

27. The Hopewell-Pennington Kiwanis Club presents $500 bonds to a boy and girl who are members of the Kiwanis Club, have displayed a cooperative attitude, and have gone above and beyond while they were students at the high school. Awarded to: Fareha Syedda Ahmed and Luke Klee Mueller.

28. The Cory Golis/Anchor House Scholarship of $1500 is offered to students of high character and achievement planning a career in the area of counseling, math, art or teaching . Awarded to: Jonathan R. Hart and Benjamin C. Wright.

29. The Pennington Business and Professional Association Award of $500 is offered to a student planning to pursue his/her interest in a business field. Awarded to: Matthew Thomas Murray.

30. The Staff at Hopewell Valley Central High School presents the DDDSP Award to a deserving and promising student as selected by members of participating staff. This year’s scholarship is in the amount of $1400. Awarded to: Jin Dan Lin.

AWARDS PREVIOUSLY PRESENTED

1. The Ackerman Scholarship of $1000 to a graduating student/athlete who best demonstrated the personal characteristics of former Hopewell Valley Administrator and Teacher, G. Randle Ackerman. The recipient is recognized for outstanding achievement, sportsmanship and loyalty in interscholastic athletics. Awarded to: Laura A. Petrillo.

2. The Denise Lugar Scholarship Award of $1900 is presented to a varsity level athlete with an excellent academic record who, in the eyes of his/her teammates and coaches, exhibits tremendous team spirit and is a team leader. Awarded to: Ryan Joseph Horvath.

3. The Bulldog Booster Club Scholarship of $500 awarded to the Most Valuable Male Athlete in the graduating class. Awarded to: Ian Jamiel McGee.

4. The Bulldog Booster Club Scholarship of $500 awarded to the Most Valuable Female Athlete in the graduating class. Awarded to: Tiffany Lee Rust.

5. The Bulldog Booster Club Scholarship of $500 awarded to the Highest Scholar-Athlete in the graduating class. Awarded to: Laura A. Petrillo.

6. The U.S. Army Reserves National Scholar-Athlete Award to the girl in the graduating class for scholastic and athletic excellence. Awarded to: Meredith Hope Batcha.

7. The U.S. Army Reserves National Scholar-Athlete Award to the boy in the graduating class for scholastic and athletic excellence. Awarded to: Matthew Thomas Murray.

8. The Jeremy Lisowski Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500 to the student in the class who demonstrates the qualities of sportsmanship and fair play. Awarded to: Catherine Price Berei.

9. Hopewell Valley Testamur were awarded to the following students. These students are eligible to receive a second certificate in addition to their state endorsed diplomas. This second certificate, a Hopewell Valley Testamur, is awarded to students as evidence of completion of course requirements and a grade average far in excess of New Jersey State graduation requirements. 11. The Trenton Section of the American Chemical Society presents student scholarships of $600 each. Awarded to: Luke Klee Mueller.
