Cozad academic decathlon team qualifies for state

Finishes second in Western Regional

The Cozad High School Academic Decathlon team has earned a spot in the state tournament.

The team shined at the Western Regional, held recently at Lexington.

This is the first year Cozad has been represented in the competition.

Cozad finished second in the regional, which earned them a trip to the state competition. That event will be February 21-22, 2003 at Creighton University in Omaha.

Students brought home 32 individual ribbons. Ribbons were awarded to the top three finishers in each division.

Team members include Austin Brockmeier, Josh Pinkelman, Tanya Terry, Kate Sims, Kaitlin Berreckman, Kristina Wylie, Kurt Gill, Dreu Young, Anthony Howell, Matthew Griffith, Sara Brown, Jessica Rangel, and Lucretia Harkness.

The Super Quiz team of Brockmeier, Pinkelman, Howell, Griffith, Brown, and Rangel finished second in the state.

These six students have spent the last three months preparing for tests in seven academic areas.

The Cozad Optimist Club paid for the team's entry fee and study materials.

Volunteer coaches are Jennifer Schneider and Beth Delp.

Several teachers also volunteered their time in helping the students prepare, including:
Ardith Davenport, language and literature; Julie Grant, math; Stan Mackowski, science; and Jane Setlik, art.
