Somersworth High School has announced its top 10 honor students in the Class of 2001. The graduates are listed in alphabetical order.

Chris Adams is the son of James and Kim Adams of Lebanon, Maine, and Richard and Debbie Carter of Moosup, Conn. Chris played baseball as an outfielder for four years. When he was a junior, he was on the math team. Chris plans on attending the University of New Hampshire in the fall and major in business. Chris has also been accepted into Colby-Sawyer, University of Connecticut, Pace University and Bentley College.

Melissa Bannon is the daughter of Gary and Ginny Bannon of Rollinsford. Melissa has been involved in the Dover Baptist Youth Leadership team for two years. She has also been on the board of directors of the Somersworth Interact Club, a community-based organization, for the past three years. Her senior year of high school, she was the Somersworth Middle School art assistant. Last summer, she went on a missions trip to El Salvador. She was also the assistant of the Somersworth High Partnership Program. She has had highest honors and has also received the Foster’s Daily Democrat Holiday Art and Writing Contest award. She will attend Plymouth State College in Plymouth in the fall, where she plans to major in English, creative writing and illustration. She was also accepted at Franklin Pierce College.

Jessica Bougie is the daughter of Jeannine and Brian McConnell of Somersworth and Joe Johnson. During the summer of 1998, she volunteered at the Rochester Clipper Home, as well as the Rochester Manor. Her freshman year, she was a member of the junior varsity basketball cheerleading squad. In her sophomore year, she was a member of the varsity basketball cheerleading squad, and her junior year a member of the varsity football cheerleading squad. She was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America for four years, and was the president of the club both her junior and senior years. She joined the varsity tennis team her sophomore year. Also that year, she was a member of the yearbook staff. She was on the student council her junior and senior years. She was a member of the National Honor Society, and went to Girls State. She was a part of the FHA/HERO her sophomore year, was president senior year. She was a part of the Master Plan Revision Committee in grades 11 and 12. In April 1998, she won Outstanding Academic Performance in Algebra I. She has also won Outstanding Effort in Spanish II, High Achievement in English II, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, U.S. National Leadership Award, Outstanding Leadership Award and High School Women’s Athletic Academic Award. Jessica will attend the University of New Hampshire.

Nicholas Brennick is the son of Katherine and Patrick Brennick of Somersworth. Nicholas was a part of the student council his sophomore year. He was a part of the soccer team his last three years of high school, as well as the National Honor Society. His senior year, he was a middle school tutor, as well as part of the yearbook staff. He was a member of the St. Paul’s advanced studies program. He will attend Boston University, where he plans to major in communications. Nicholas was also accepted at UNH.

Elizabeth Anne Huerkamp is the daughter of Daniel Joseph and Mary Ellen A. Huerkamp of Somersworth. Elizabeth has been a member of the Somersworth High School band, the New Hampshire Youth Orchestra, a junior volunteer at Frisbee Memorial Hospital and a CCD instructor and volunteer at Holy Trinity Church. She participated in the Spring 2000 Mystery Player and began piano lessons in 1999. She is the recipient of the Eagle of the Cross Award for Mystery Play. Elizabeth will attend Plymouth State College in Plymouth, where she was awarded the presidential scholarship of $3,000 per year for four years. Her major will be elementary education with a minor in music.

Ben Johnson is the son of Rebecca Johnson of Somersworth. He was a member of the high school football team all four years of high school, and was the captain of the team his senior year. He played lacrosse during his junior and senior years and was the assistant captain his senior year. He was also a part of the school’s band his freshman and sophomore years. He won the Bausch & Lomb Award. He will attend the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Mass., where he plans to major in mechanical engineering. He was also accepted at Northeastern University and UNH.

Ashley Morse is the daughter of Vickie and Calvin Morse of Rollinsford. Ashley has been a part of the school’s student council for four years. She has been the secretary and treasurer of the Crusaders for Christ Youth Group for the last three years. She became a member of the National Honor Society her senior year. She has won awards including the U.S. Academy National Commemorative Certificate for Leadership and Academics. Ashley will attend the Zion Bible Institute in Barrington, R.I., where she plans to major in Bible and minor in music and drama.

Elizabeth Merrill is the daughter of Cindy and Frank Merrill of Somersworth. She has been a part of the National Honor Society and drama club for the last three years. She has been a part of the World Language Club for all four years of high school. Elizabeth has won many awards, including Excellence in Spanish, All American Scholar, Kindness Award from the Humane Society, Foster’s Daily Democrat Art Award, Tae Kwon-Do National Bronze Medalist, Tae Kwon-Do Regional Gold Medalist, U.S. Leadership Merit Award and "Who’s Who Among American High School Students." Elizabeth will attend the University of New Hampshire, where she plans to major in biology. She was also accepted at Simmons College.

Danielle Marshall is the daughter of Cheryl Cameron of Somersworth. Danielle was a member of the varsity softball team her junior and senior years, and was captain senior year. She was a member of the junior varsity softball team during her sophomore year. She was a part of the math team and the National Honor Society the last three years of high school. Danielle won awards including All-State Catcher, Francis Wayland Parker Scholar, Harvard Books Award, Wells College Leadership Award and Student of the Month in October 1999. Danielle will attend Bentley College, in Waltham, Mass., and plans to major in business. She was also accepted to University of Massachusetts, University of Connecticut, University of Rhode Island and Merrimack College.

Tracey Richards is the daughter of Michele Hebert and Mark Richards of Somersworth. Tracey was active in her school’s volleyball, softball and junior Olympic volleyball teams. She also was the class treasurer, part of the yearbook staff, FBLA, DECA, drama club and prom steering committee. She has won awards including Wendy’s Heisman, 2000 Volleyball All-State/All-Scholastic, 2001 N.H. Women’s Athletic/Academic Award, 2001 DECA state champion in retail merchandising and civic consciousness and 2000 Class I volleyball state champion. Tracey will attend the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., and plans to major in management. She was also accepted to New Hampshire College, Christopher Newport University, Castleton College, University of Virginia and Endicott College.
