Awards honor local journalism students

Several journalism students at Truman and William Chrisman high schools recently received awards for their work on school newspapers and yearbooks.
Award winners from Truman were:
Outstanding Journalist: Joshua Walsh, newspaper; Will Palmer, yearbook.
Teresa Carpenter Writing Awards: Heather Mills, newspaper; David Hettrick, yearbook.
LeRoy Brown Excellence in Journalism Awards: Sarah Orlovick, publications I; Malia May, journalism I.
Gold Key from International Quill and Scroll: Damian Blake, newspaper cartoon.
Missouri Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) Awards:
Show-Me Award (top award): Damian Blake, cartoon; Joshua Walsh, newspaper in-depth story; Chrissy Nagel and David Hettrick, yearbook theme copy; Stefanie Tompson, yearbook club copy; Carrie Grice, photography; Jennifer Plaster, photography.
Superior awards: Jason Hickman, newspaper news story and newspaper editorial; Joe Parrish, newspaper personal column; Kevin McGhee and Eric Slaybaugh, newspaper reviews column; Chrissy Nagel, David Hettrick Jason Hickman and Damion Blake, yearbook theme concept; Jeff Reinhard, yearbook sports copy; Sarah Friend, Heather Hammons, Melanie Shields, Amiee Steger, Jennifer Plaster and Carrie Grice, photography; Joshua Walsh and Natalie Buckley, multicultural awareness stories for newspaper.
The Truman student newspaper, "The Spirt of `98," received the All-Missouri rating, the highest given.
The school also received awards for last year`s yearbook and newspaper: 1997 Heritage (yearbook) received All-Missouri honors from University of Missouri-Columbia, All-American honors from National Scholastic Press Association, and medalist from Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
The newspaper, "The Spirit of `97," received All-American and medalist honors, as well as the Gallup Award from International Quill and Scroll.
Several Chrisman students also received MIPA awards for work with the school newspaper and yearbook. They were:
Show-Me award (top award) Rosie Ryan, yearbook sportswriting.
Honorable mention: Malissa Hull, newswriting; Adam Lipps, sportswriting; Tara Adams, feature writing.
Journalism Educators of Metropolitan Kansas City:
Adam Lipps, second place and honorable mention, sportswriting.
Dennis Escobar, honorable mention, editorial writing.
Stacie Anderson, National Scholastic Press Association honorable mention, editorial cartoons.
Several Chrisman students received MIPA photography superior awards:
Derek Jenkins, football; Silya Sinaiwski, softball and art face painting photo; Laura Hampton, color, girls in kimonos; Andrea Thompson, girl and boy on a slide; Molly Morris, swimmers reading statistics; Stephanie Herbers, tennis player with water thrown in face.
Molly Morris was named Outstanding Gleam Photographer for 1998. Andrew Gore was named Photography Rookie of the Year for 1998.
The Chrisman yearbook, the 1996-97 Gleam, was named a Pacemaker finalist by the National Scholastic Press Association, which also ranked it eighth best of show. The 1996-97 Gleam received an excellent rating from the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association.
"The Envoy," the William Chrisman student newspaper, received a superior rating from the MIPA.
