OHS' Top 100 Students Honored
Submitted by the Oswego City School District
The Eleventh Annual Top 100 Dinner, co-sponsored by the Oswego Rotary Club and the Oswego City School District Board of Education, recognized the academic accomplishments of the top twenty-five students in the ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade classes at the Oswego High School.
Sunday evening everal hundred family and friends, joined by members of the Oswego Board of Education and several Oswego Rotary members, packed the Oswego Elks Club for this annual event.
Oswego City School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gary Buehler praised the students for their academic achievements. He indicated he understood the difficulty to be at the top of your class, school, work or any other endeavor. Dr. Buehler noted he felt there were four points, which "I think are necessary to achieve."
Buehler expressed to the students that they should have a clear sense of purpose, the ability to focus on their goals, accept time management and most importantly, possess a sense of balance in their life
Academic success is the major criteria to be a member of the "Top 100." Only a handful of students have earned the privilege to attend all four years of high school. This year Seema Bhopale, Dustin Gibson, Eric Goodnough, Kevin Hill, Andrew Knapp, Rachel Larson, Joseph Mancuso, and Carolyn Shaddak were the members of the senior class who have honored at the last four dinners.
The remaining seniors recognized for this year included David Aylward, Thomas Breen Jr., Jana Cooper, Zachary Farden, Jennifer Flynn, Robert Kaier, Keri Krisiak, Patrick Landers, Julie Mangano, Maureen Mayo, Kristy McNamara, Nicole Natoli, Nicholas Ruggio, Stephanie Saisselin, Eric Traub, Elizabeth Tyrie and Gretchen Waters.
Oswego High School members of the "Class of 2001" who were honored included: Varunan Ananda, Jeffrey Ballyns, Jennifer Bristol, Cassidy Buckley, Daniel Cohen, James Cullinan IV, Benjamin Delia, Caitlin Demm, Gregory Dufore, Kevin Flaherty, Kathryn Foradori, Lisa Fountain, Daniel Jones, Albert Kim, Tara Maurice, Angela May, Megan McCarthy, Spencer McGrath, Amanda Morris, Caitlin Oberst, Alicia Oleyourryk, Stacey Sereno, Daniel Stead, Richard Thompson, and Kara Wallace.
Sophomores honored as members of the "Top 100" were Brittany Bullard, Colleen Callahan, Richard Chetney, Carlos Dator, Alexis DeCosa, Alyson DeCosa, Allison Easton, Kathleen Frawley, peter Gallagher, Sarah Galvin, Anna Hill, Claire Hosley, Trevor Jones, Matthew McCrobie, Jacob Mumm, Melissa Neild, Shawna Opet, Elizabeth Sackman, Kathleen Scanlon, Jonathan Shaver, Paul Swartz, Daniel Tascarella, Meghan Tice, Kristin Wallace and Seth Williams.
The top twenty-five ninth graders included Aaron Avrakotos, Amanda Blum, David Cowell, Mariel Dator, Devin Deane, Patricia Della Penna, Louis Fernandes, James Flanagan, Keegan Harse, Sally Holthouse, Aric Iosue, Dan Kapuscinski, Brian Kolva, Nicholas Lloyd, Laura Moore, Rachel Morris, Megan Oberst, Michelle Quinn, Jennifer Rinoldo, Kyle Schaefer, Catherine Smith, Julia Stead, Sunny Tice, Sheena Tonkin and Ashley Wallace.
Making certain that every student succeeds is one of the goals set forth by Dr. Buehler and events such as the "Top 100" Dinner are true indicators of "student success." Dr. Buehler indicated it was an honor to attend the dinner and noted, "This event puts it all in perspective. This is what school is all about."
Eleven years ago former Oswego City School District administrator and Oswego Rotary member Ed Caraccioli proposed the concept where students should be recognized.
The "Top 100" dinner was born.
At the conclusion of the most recent dinner 1,100 deserving Oswego High School students have been honored for academic efforts and with support from Rotary, the Oswego City School District and family, hundreds more students will be honored in years to come.
