Middle school UIL (University Interscholastic League) Competition

More than 700 SAISD middle school students participated in UIL competition held at Highlands High School. The top winners were in:

Editorial Writing – 7th grade: Miguel Vazquez, Rhodes, first place; Lysette Martinez and Tina Rose Cavazos, both from Rhodes, tied for second; and Angela Ortiz of Connell, Stevie Rocha of Cooper, and Regina Branford of Tafolla, all tied for third.

Editorial Writing – 8th grade: Lorraine Serna of Poe, Monica Fuentes of Rogers, Destiny Courvier of Rogers, and Devin Resendez of Tafolla, all tied for first; and Sabrina Campos of Davis, Amelia Rosas of Poe, Ilianna Perez of Poe, Vanessa De La Rosa of Tafolla, and Clene Hinojosa of Connell, all tied for second.

Oral Reading – 6th grade: Ariel Guzman, Tafolla, first; Evita Rodriguez, Hawthorne Academy, second; and Josephine Hernandez, Connell, third.

Oral Reading – 7th grade: Holly Pompa, Tafolla, first; Bianca Rosas, Poe, second; and Leona Hudspeth, Poe, third.

Oral Reading – 8th grade: Ashley Simpson, Longfellow, first; Maria Galindo, Tafolla, second; and Monica Garza, Page, third.

Impromptu Speaking – 7th grade: Nisa Sanders, Hawthorne, first; Richard Young, Connell, second; and Lazaro Cardenas, Rhodes, third.
